Raymond Yong has given chamber music performances at Musica Viva’s Huntington Festival, the Melbourne International Festival, the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, and the Linari Classic in Italy. He has been engaged as piano concerto soloist with many of the major orchestras in Australia, including the Melbourne Symphony, Sydney Symphony, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Raymond Yong was born in Malaysia, emigrating to Australia at the age of two. He received his initial musical training in Perth, performing regularly in public piano recitals from an early age. He has since gained widespread recognition as a pianist around Australia, performing solo recitals, concertos with orchestra, and chamber music concerts with some of Australia’s finest musicians and ensembles.
Raymond Yong is a graduate of the University of Melbourne where he studied piano under Stephen McIntyre and conducting under John Hopkins. He also holds the German Artist’s Diploma from the Hannover University of Music and Drama where he studied piano under Karl-Heinz Kaemmerling. His teachers in Perth were Stephanie Coleman and Mark Coughlan.
Raymond Yong was a Young Visiting Artist at the Australian National Academy of Music in 2003 and 2004, and has been a guest lecturer and piano teacher at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He is currently based in Perth, Western Australia where he is Music Fellow at St George's College, University of Western Australia.
Also known as a conductor, Raymond Yong made his conducting debut in 2010 with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. He was the founding Artistic Director of Orchestra 21, Music Director of the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Victoria Chorale. He is also a regular visiting conductor for the Barrier Reef Orchestra in North Queensland.
